Consumer Alert: George Funeral Home (Aiken) Closed

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is aware of the closing of George Funeral Home in Aiken. Consumers may have questions about the status of their preneed funeral contract and their potential options. If your question is not addressed below, please contact SCDCA at 803-734-4200 or legal@scconsumer.gov. The information is current as of 9/30/2025. Can DCA confirm a preneed funeral contract?

Yes. We will check our database to see if we received your contract. Please call 803-734-4200 to inquire about contracts. 

Should I continue making my preneed payments?

If you have been making payments to a preneed policy insurer, continue to make those payments or your policy could be cancelled. If you do not have a preneed insurance policy, please call SCDCA immediately for more information.

Do I (or my family member) have to stay at George Funeral Home?
  • You have the option of waiting to see if a new funeral home opens at that location in the near future.
  • You are not required to stay at George Funeral Home. You can transfer to any preneed licensed funeral home in the state. Check our Licensee Lookup page for a list of licensed providers. When you select a licensed provider, tell them you have a contract with George Funeral Home and to contact SCDCA. We can help transfer the contract to your new provider.
If my family member passes while the location is closed, what can I do?

Any licensed funeral home can perform services. Tell the funeral director that your family member had a preneed contract at George Funeral Home and to call SCDCA. We will be able to provide them the information they need.

Will George Funeral Home reopen?

SCDCA does not know that at this time. We understand there is a potential successor to take over the George Funeral Home location.

Can I get my money back?
  • If the contract is revocable, then you should be able to cancel it. Contact your insurer for any questions regarding whether the insurance policy itself can be cancelled.
  • If the contract is irrevocable, then you cannot cancel it. You either need to transfer it to another preneed licensed funeral home or wait to see if another funeral home opens at that location in the near future.
